GST in India: the basics
India simplified GST from 22 September 2025 (the 'GST 2.0' reform): the old 12% and 28% slabs are gone, leaving two main rates - 5% and 18% - plus 0% on essentials like dairy, key medicines, and educational materials, 40% on luxury and sin goods, and special 3% / 0.25% rates for gold and precious stones. 18% is the standard rate for most services and many goods, which is why it's preloaded here - edit the rate for 5% items.
The total GST is the same everywhere in India, but the invoice splits it by geography: sell within your state and you charge CGST + SGST (9% + 9% at the standard rate); sell to another state and you charge a single IGST line at the full rate. Your GSTIN must appear on every tax invoice.
Registration is compulsory above a turnover threshold - broadly ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services in most states, lower in special category states - and smaller businesses can opt for the composition scheme instead of the standard regime. Registered businesses file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B (monthly, or quarterly under QRMP). Thresholds and schemes shift with Council decisions, so confirm your position on the GST portal.
Authoritative source: GST portal (Government of India). Rates and thresholds change with new finance laws - when in doubt, the authority's current guidance wins.
Worked examples at 18%
Adding GST: a ₹10,000 net price x 18% = ₹1,800 GST, so the customer pays ₹11,800. On an intra-state sale the invoice shows it as CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900; on an inter-state sale it's a single IGST line of ₹1,800.
Removing GST: a ₹11,800 GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 net, with ₹1,800 of GST inside it - not the ₹2,124 you'd get by wrongly taking 18% of the gross.
India GST FAQ
What are the GST rates in India?
Since 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 5% and 18% - the 12% and 28% slabs were scrapped in the GST 2.0 reform. Essentials such as dairy, many medicines, and educational materials are at 0%, luxury and sin goods carry 40%, and gold and precious stones keep special 3% and 0.25% rates. Most services are at 18%.
How do I calculate 18% GST?
To add it: net price x 0.18, so ₹10,000 becomes ₹11,800. To remove it from an inclusive price: divide by 1.18 - ₹11,800 contains ₹1,800 of GST, not the ₹2,124 you'd get by wrongly subtracting 18% of the gross.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
They're the same tax, split by where the sale happens. Within one state, the rate is halved between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST) - 9% + 9% for an 18% supply. Across state lines, the full rate is charged as one IGST line. The customer pays the same total either way; only the invoice layout changes.
Who must register for GST in India?
Businesses above the turnover threshold - broadly ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services in most states - must register and put their GSTIN on every invoice. Smaller businesses can register voluntarily or use the composition scheme. Growpins Ledger stores your GSTIN and applies your GST rate to every invoice automatically, so the split and the filing totals take care of themselves.
