VAT in Kenya: the basics

Kenya's standard VAT rate is 16%, charged by VAT-registered businesses on taxable goods and services. Exports and a schedule of essential goods are zero-rated, and some supplies are exempt.

Returns are filed monthly through the KRA's iTax system - traditionally due by the 20th of the following month - and the return needs the VAT you charged (output tax) netted against the VAT you paid suppliers (input tax).

Registration is compulsory above a turnover threshold set by the KRA; below it, registration is optional. The threshold and the zero-rated schedule move with Finance Acts, so confirm your position on iTax or with the KRA before charging.

Authoritative source: Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Rates and thresholds change with new finance laws - when in doubt, the authority's current guidance wins.

Worked examples at 16%

Adding VAT: a KSh 50,000 net price x 16% = KSh 8,000 VAT, so the customer pays KSh 58,000.

Removing VAT: a KSh 58,000 VAT-inclusive price ÷ 1.16 = KSh 50,000 net, with KSh 8,000 of VAT inside it.

Kenya VAT FAQ

What is the VAT rate in Kenya?

16% is the standard rate. Exports and a schedule of essentials are zero-rated, and certain supplies are exempt - the schedules are amended by Finance Acts, so check the current lists with the KRA.

How do I calculate 16% VAT?

To add: net price x 0.16, so KSh 50,000 becomes KSh 58,000. To remove it from an inclusive price: divide by 1.16 - KSh 58,000 contains KSh 8,000 of VAT, not the KSh 9,280 you'd get by wrongly taking 16% of the gross.

When are Kenyan VAT returns due?

Monthly via iTax, traditionally by the 20th of the following month. The return nets output VAT against input VAT, which is why keeping per-invoice VAT records all month beats reconstructing them at the deadline.

Who must register for VAT in Kenya?

Businesses above the KRA's turnover threshold must register; smaller businesses may register voluntarily. Confirm the current threshold with the KRA before deciding.
