The two formulas (and the classic mistake)

Adding tax is the easy direction: tax = net × rate, gross = net + tax. At Nigeria's 7.5% VAT, ₦100,000 becomes ₦107,500.

Removing tax is where people slip. A £120 price that includes 20% VAT does not contain £24 of tax - the tax was charged on the net, not the gross. Divide by 1.20 instead: net £100, VAT £20. Get this wrong on a tax filing and you'll over-declare the tax you collected.

General form: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). The calculator's "Price including tax" mode applies it for any rate.

Tax Calculator FAQ

How do I add VAT/GST/Sales Tax to a price?

Multiply the net price by the tax rate: tax = net × rate. Then gross = net + tax. Example at Nigeria's 7.5% VAT: ₦100,000 × 0.075 = ₦7,500 tax, so the customer pays ₦107,500. Pick your country preset above and the calculator does this live.

How do I remove tax from a price that already includes it?

Divide the gross price by (1 + rate) - don't just subtract the percentage. Example at UK VAT 20%: a £120 gross price is £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, with £20 of VAT. Subtracting 20% of £120 (£24) would be wrong. Switch the calculator to 'Price including tax' for this.

Which countries and rates are built in?

Presets for Nigeria (VAT 7.5%), Ghana (15%), Kenya (16%), South Africa (15%), India (GST 18%), the UK (VAT 20%), the US (Sales Tax - set your state/local rate), Canada (GST/HST 5%), Australia (GST 10%), Germany (19%), France (20%), and the UAE (5%). Every rate stays editable for reduced, zero-rated, or state-specific rates.

What's the difference between tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive pricing?

Tax-exclusive means the sticker price is before tax and tax is added at checkout (common in the US). Tax-inclusive means the sticker price already contains the tax (common for consumer prices in VAT/GST countries). This calculator handles both directions - that's what the two modes are.

Can I use it for India's different GST slabs?

Yes. The India preset defaults to 18%, and you can change the rate to 5%, 12%, or 28% for other slabs. The extract mode also works for pulling GST out of an inclusive price.

How is this different from a Growpins Ledger account?

This calculator answers one-off questions. A free Growpins Ledger account applies your tax rate to every invoice automatically, tracks the tax you've collected for filing, and reports it in your P&L - so at filing time the number is already there.
