How do I calculate shipping cost?
Total shipping cost = base rate + (rate per kg × weight) + fuel surcharge + insurance + packaging. A 5kg parcel with a 1,500 base, 350/kg rate, 8% fuel surcharge, and 200 packaging costs 1,500 + 1,750 + 260 + 200 = 3,710. Enter your carrier's actual rates above.
What is volumetric (dimensional) weight?
Carriers charge by whichever is higher: the actual weight, or a calculated weight based on the package's dimensions (length × width × height ÷ a divisor the carrier sets, commonly 5,000 or 6,000 for cm/kg). A large, light box - foam packaging, a lampshade - can cost more to ship than its actual weight suggests. Check your carrier's formula before quoting a customer.
Should I charge customers exactly what shipping costs?
Many sellers add a small markup to cover the packaging labor, the trip to the courier, and the occasional damaged-in-transit replacement - all real costs shipping fees rarely capture. Others absorb it into the product price and offer 'free shipping', which sells better but hides the cost. Either way, know your true cost first; this calculator's markup field shows the customer-facing price either way.
Do I need insurance on every shipment?
For low-value items, self-insuring (accepting the occasional loss) is often cheaper than paying insurance on every parcel. For high-value or fragile goods, insurance protects a single loss from wiping out a month's margin on that product line - run the numbers on your average claim rate before deciding.
